Three Black Millennial Doctors To Watch

Are you ready to see them shake the table?

It’s June, y’all! Can you believe it?

We are officially halfway through 2021. But, honestly, it feels like the year is just starting since outside seems to finally be opening up. As someone who had to have a Zoom graduation last year, I cannot tell you how happy I was to see the graduation season would be taking place in person for our newly minted melanated doctors.

As a medical student, I love seeing our people (our Black doctors!) win – especially when it comes to getting that MD. Also, I’ve been loving the vulnerability that folks have been sharing.

It’s hard out here in these very White, very archaic, medical school streets!

I get very excited when I see the newest class of Black doctors in green hoods.
They are needed now more than ever and I couldn’t be more excited to see how they turn the tide like the poppin’ Black millennial doctors they are.

We are stronger together and social media is an incredible way to create community when certain structures want to keep us apart.

So, who are these amazing doctors? And why should you support and follow them?

Where in the world can I begin with Dr. Bazzell? She is a proud non-traditional medical student and a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine. During her gap year between residency and graduating medical school, she worked closely with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

She is currently an incoming family medicine resident in New York City. If there is one word to describe her blog and Instagram, it’s vulnerability. She has never been afraid to put her wins and her losses upfront for us all to see.

And that’s a revolutionary act!

As Black women, we are often praised for how strong we are and how much we can bear. No more of that! Especially when that trope forces us to deny how we are feeling mentally, physically, and emotionally…

Also, as an advocate for women’s health, keep an eye out for Dr. Bazzell’s upcoming moves that help uplift our community. From the looks of it, she’s just getting started!

Whew! As my favorite podcast (@aroundthecurls) says, duality is a thing and that’s exactly what you will get with Dr. Evans. Respectability politics is this rainy cloud that tries to downpour on our shine! In professional settings, we are told what Black women should wear, ways we should style our hair, and what we should and should not share.

Meanwhile, our White counterparts get to be everything and anything and nobody questions their titles.

With Dr. Evans, you get it all! When she’s not lighting up our timelines with her vacation and brunch pics, she’s being real about studying and the balance between productivity and self-care. She’s not sorry about it either. In a time when Black maternal health is finally getting the shine that it has always deserved, you can count on Dr. Evans to talk that talk on and off the internet.

She’s also one of the newest Black OB/GYNs on the block!

Introducing the newest face of family medicine, Dr. Sagesse! If you are looking to be inspired and uplifted, please look no further than her page. She’s unapologetic about her faith and her mission as one of the newest doctors to hit the hospital.

One thing about these new Black millennial doctors?

They are showing us that belief in a higher power and a career in medicine can exist together in harmony. As we all know, our faith communities have been the backbone of the Black community for hundreds of years. So, shout out to Dr. Sagesse for always reminding us to never forget the practices that strengthen us and have been strengthening us for years. Also, I’m pretty sure the color yellow was made for her…get it, Gabrielle!

The new face and shape of medicine is closer than we think.

Black millennial doctors are stepping into their roles and doing the damn thing.

Keep applying pressure, y’all!

Your work does not go unnoticed.
